History of Brazil: From Pre-Colonial Times to the Present

Brazil has a rich history that spans thousands of years. The indigenous people of Brazil have been living in the region for tens of thousands of years before the arrival of the Europeans in 1500. The Portuguese navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral arrived in Brazil in 1500 and claimed the land for the Portuguese Empire. Brazil became a colony of Portugal, and for the next three centuries, the Portuguese exploited the land for its natural resources, primarily sugarcane. In 1822, Brazil declared its independence from Portugal, and in 1889, it became a republic. The country has gone through several phases of economic and political turmoil, including periods of dictatorship and military rule, but has also seen periods of economic growth and stability. Today, Brazil is the largest country in South America and the fifth-largest country in the world by both land area and population.
